Thierry Garnier to step down as Kingfisher CEO and join Ahold Delhaize

Garnier’s departure has been announced after seven years at the helm of the DIY giant. He steps down with the company in a strong position, with its recent results for the year to January 31, 2026, showing a 6% increase in profit before tax against the year before. 

Kingfisher chair Claudia Arney said: “During his tenure, Thierry has overseen the launch and progress of our Powered by Kingfisher strategy, led the company through the Covid-19 pandemic and driven many strategic innovations such as the launch of Kingfisher’s marketplaces and the development of our trade business, while also executing at pace on all our priorities.

“Under his leadership, Kingfisher has become a leading home improvement group underpinned by strong banners across the UK and Europe. Thierry has built an experienced leadership team who are well placed to continue delivering on our strategy and growth opportunities. We wish him the very best for the future.”

Kingfisher said Garnier’s departure date would be announced in “due course”, adding that he has a 12-month notice period. It added that Kingfisher has a succession plan in place and the search for a successor is underway. This will include a “comprehensive review” of both internal and external candidates. 

Ahold Delhaize’s statement said that subject to approval from shareholders, Garnier would be expected to take over from current chief executive Frans Muller at the company’s AGM in April 2027.

Garnier joined Kingfisher after 22 years at French retail giant Carrefour, including seven years as chief executive of its China business.

Garnier said: “It has been a real privilege to serve as Kingfisher’s CEO over these years.

“I am very proud of the progress we have made together and what we continue to build for the future. I remain focused on continuing to execute on our strategic plans with all my energies, so as to leave Kingfisher in the best possible shape for the future, and I look forward to ensuring a successful transition to my successor in due course.”

As well as operating major Dutch supermarket chain Albert Heijn and other European businesses, Ahold Delhaize owns a number of US brands including Food Lion and Stop & Shop.

In a separate statement about joining Ahold Delhaize, Garnier said: “I am passionate about retail. I have long admired Ahold Delhaize as a company, and I am honoured by the nomination. I look forward to getting to know the organisation and its great local brands, and to working with teams across the group to keep serving customers well and creating value every day.”
