Retailer trials toy department in Glasgow store
House of Fraser looks likely to enter the£2.8 billion toy market, in a push that could hurt competitors such as John Lewis.

The designer-led store is understood to be gearing up to sell items such as dolls and board games in specialist toy departments.

Chief executive John Coleman yesterday revealed the retailer has opened its first toy department in its Glasgow store as a trial.

House of Fraser selected the long-standing toy-buying team at Jenners in Edinburgh, after it acquired the Scottish retailer earlier this year, to compile a suitable offer for its chain.

If the trial is successful, Coleman intends to roll out the toy assortment at House of Fraser's largest outlets.

Reviewing the retailer's interim results, finance director David Adams said it had shown 'robust performance in an extremely difficult trading period'.

Coleman admitted trading had got even tougher in recent weeks. Like-for-like sales were down 6.8 per cent for the past eight weeks, he said.

However, Coleman said he was 'bullish' about the store's prospects for Christmas trading. He said: 'I believe consumers have got money, which they are now using to pay back debt. It is my personal opinion that this will not continue until Christmas.

'It is inconceivable that the average family will spend less on Christmas for the second year in a row,' he added.
