Superdrug is to launch a specialist “candy store” beauty format, one of a raft of new shop designs that aim to strengthen its position in the healthcare and beauty markets.

In the next three months the 860-store retailer will unveil a standalone beauty format, its first pharmacy in a doctor’s surgery, and a well-being shop design.

The beauty format will open in Cardiff, offering inexpensive and convenient beauty treatments such as eyebrow threading, manicures and hair blow-drying, alongside a more premium product offer.

Superdrug boss Joey Wat told Retail Week: “We want to push beauty to the next level. We see a real need on the high street for a quick fix.”

The colourful, quirky design will give the store model the appearance of a candy store, Wat said.

She added that if the format works, there is potential for between 20 and 50 beauty stores in the UK. The shops would open near existing Superdrug stores so customers could access the retailer’s full product offer.

Superdrug has been introducing more beauty treatments such as manicures over the past two years.

The retailer will unveil its well-being format in Banbury, Oxfordshire in May as it seeks to become a healthcare destination and strengthen its position against Boots.

The store will focus on healthcare products alongside a reduced beauty offer.
