Toy and gift retailer Hawkin’s Bazaar has hired a senior TK Maxx executive as its new boss as the business ramps up its expansion plans.

Lyle Finlay, currently senior vice-president of operations and loss prevention at TK Maxx, joins Hawkin’s Bazaar as chief executive in July.

He replaces Toby Templer, who has run the retailer for 22 years and whose father founded the business. Templer becomes Hawkin’s Bazaar president and will take “more of a back seat, as planned”.

Templer, who owns 40% of the business with the remainder owned by Primary Capital, described Finlay as a “very experienced retailer, very likeable and hands on” who will help the 60-store retailer open 20 permanent shops a year. Hawkin’s Bazaar also operates 60 temporary shops across the UK.

During his time as managing director of Claire’s Accessories, Finlay built the retailer up from 40 to 350 stores. He has also worked at Nike and furniture chain Natuzzi.

Tobar, the company that runs Hawkin’s, also owns toys website Letterbox.co.uk, which it bought from home shopping group Findel last year. It also operates gift site Stockingfillers.co.uk and is getting ready to launch Giftdigger.co.uk.

Finlay was placed by headhunting firm Korn/Ferry Whitehead Mann.
