Harrods has unveiled a revamped technology department on its third floor.

The new Sound & Vision space has been extended by 4,500 sq ft to 15,000 sq ft and divided into branded concession zones including the LG Lounge and the Micro Anvika technology area, which features branded products from Hewlett Packard and Samsung.

There is also a Sony Galleria and a Loewe Sound Room and Vodafone has installed a business section in the department.

Product highlights include a£15,000 virtual reality racing car. The overhauled area has been a year in the making and at the end of this month a 2,500 sq ft hi-fi room will be added.

Harrods director for home, furniture, sound and vision David Miller said: “We took a decision to use concessions because the pace of change meant that trying to use own-brand just wouldn’t work.”

The changes were revealed as Selfridges put back the opening of its revamped technology area at its Oxford Street flagship. The department will now not open before February. Selfridges has installed a temporary shopfit while it decides the final shape the department will take.

  • Selfridges is to link up with the Science Museum as part of celebrations to mark its centenary next year. The retailer will turn 100 on March 15 and is looking at ties with the museum, which also becomes a centenarian next year.
