Man who oversaw buy-out bows out
Hamleys group has replaced John Watkinson with Nick Mather as chief executive. Mather is the group's financial director and will take on the role on September 16.

Watkinson said he was leaving the retailer to move on to new challenges. Mather (pictured) has more than 15 years' international retailing experience, including finance director roles at Liberty and French Connection Group.

Hamleys was subject to a management buy-out in 2003, after a bidding war that included Baugur and Waterstone's. It is opening three large-format concessions in Denmark before Christmas, part of an international expansion strategy kicked off by Watkinson.

Hamleys non-executive director Stuart Rose said: 'This is very much a personal decision for John. He leaves with our thanks for a job well done. Nick, who has played a highly commercial role since joining the company, has a wealth of experience and is well-placed to take over and develop the business both in the UK and internationally.'
