Halfords will offer practical driving tests from its stores as the car part and cycle specialist teams up with the Government to make test centres more accessible in the UK.
Launching the service in the Autumn, Halfords is looking to install centres at Manchester, Glasgow, Worcester, Watford and Kettering initially.
The retailer will not earn money for volunteering for the scheme but expects to benefit from the footfall generated by the service.
The Driving Standards Agency triggered the initiative, which began exploring a new approach last year, offering tests through local authority buildings and leisure centres.
Up to 1,500 test could be taken at each store per year with two examiners based at each location.
Halfords chief executive David Wild said: “Halfords is already known as the place where you go for all your motoring needs and this offers us the opportunity to work with a Government department on a major initiative that fits perfectly with our commitment to be a ‘Friend of the Motorist’.”
