Waitrose has announced the appointments of trading and online directors expected to play key roles in future growth.

Waitrose, part of the John Lewis Partnership, has named Charlotte di Cello as director of trading. She joins next month from restaurant chain Leon, where she is chief commercial officer.

She succeeds Waitrose veteran Rupert Thomas, commercial trading director, who is leaving the grocer after 17 years.

Laura Burbedge, who has been Waitrose’s interim online director since October, will take up the position permanently.

Di Cello also brings experience gained in trading, finance and strategy roles at Sainsbury’s.

Waitrose said Burbedge “has played an integral role in the successful growth of Waitrose’s online business this year” as the grocer parted company with former partner Ocado, which has launched a joint venture with rival Marks & Spencer.

Waitrose executive director James Bailey said: “Both roles are pivotal to the delivery of the Waitrose strategy to ensure we maintain our leading market position on quality, ethics, availability and value for customers.”

The changes are the latest at Waitrose and stablemate department store business John Lewis, as Partnership chair Dame Sharon White seeks to overhaul the group.
