Tesco has bought Giraffe for £48.6m and plans to launch the family friendly restaurant in some of its larger stores.

Giraffe has 48 restaurants nationwide, including franchises at Heathrow and other UK airports, as well as in Dubai.

The move follows Tesco’s acquisition of a 49% stake in coffee shop chain Harris+Hoole and the bakery chain Euphorium as the retailer looks for alternative revenue streams following low volume growth in the core grocery market.

The Giraffe acquisition may also allow Tesco to fill space in some of its larger out-of-town Tesco Extra stores, which chief executive Philip Clarke last year admitted may be too big. Tesco already has Nando’s restaurants in some of its stores.
