The grocers enjoyed a sales surge over the weekend ahead of a promising forthcoming Jubilee weekend.

Shoppers flocked to the grocers for party and barbecue food over the weekend as Brits enjoyed the sun.

Sainsbury’s said it had sold more salad packs, prepared fruit, burgers and rolls on Friday than any other Friday in its 143 year history.

All the major grocers are gearing up for the extended weekend over the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with promotions and social media activity.

Shoppers are planning to spend a combined £823m, compared to the estimated £480m spent over the Royal Wedding weekend last year, according to Moneysupermarket.com.

Asda has re-introduced its £5 off your next £40 shop promotion until June 3, which can be redeemed until June 17. The tactic, which it is running under the Let’s Celebrate strapline, has been credited for the grocer’s strong performance at Christmas. Tesco is running a £5 off your next £40 shop when you spend £20.

Morrisons is running averts under the strapline Great Bargains for Great Britain while Tesco has a plethora of British-based in store merchandising.

Sainsbury’s chief executive Justin King is predicting a sales boost for retailers second only to Christmas and the grocer has set up a Twitter hashtag – #myjubileeparty – to create a buzz around the event.

The weekend is also expected to be strong for upmarket grocers Waitrose and Marks & Spencer as shoppers trade up for party food.
