Former Co-op chief executive Steve Murrells has taken the top job at Tesco supplier Hilton Food.

Hilton Food, which supplies meat and ready meals to supermarkets, said Murrells will replace current chief executive Philip Heffer as boss from July 3.

Hilton Food chairman Robert Watson said: “Steve has an outstanding record as a leader within the food industry and the board is confident that his considerable experience will be of huge benefit to Hilton Foods as we take the business to the next stage.”

Murrells was previously chief executive of the Co-operative Group for five years until he stepped down in 2022. Prior to joining the Co-op, Murrells was previously the chief executive of Tulip.

His connection to the company goes back nearly 30 years, when Murrells was previously one of Hilton Food’s first customer and commercial partners at Tesco.

His sudden departure from the Co-op led to the appointment of then chief financial officer Shirine Khoury-Haq to the helm of the c-store specialist.
