Swedish online discounter Motatos is set to launch in the UK in June.

The online supermarket, which operates under the Matsmart name in mainland Europe, sells surplus food from wholesalers at a discounted price.

Motatos “saves” foodstuffs that would otherwise be thrown away due to changes in packaging, seasonal changes or short best-before dates.

Motatos will offer ambient goods such as large packs, beverages, snacks, household goods, pet food and beauty products.

Deliveries made using third party distributors will take between one and three days, with the price of delivery dependent on the number of boxes used to package the order.

The arrival of the discounter comes as shoppers ponder switching supermarkets amid the cost of living crisis.

The business was founded in Sweden in 2014 and has since expanded to Finland, Denmark, and most recently Germany in 2020.

UK country manager Christabel Biella said: “UK shoppers are incredibly passionate about sustainability but they need easy and cost-effective ways to make sustainable choices that often come with a hefty price tag.

“That is why I’m so excited to join Motatos, especially at this point in its development following incredible success in other European markets.”
