Aldi has unveiled a list of “priority locations” as it continues to eye new UK sites to open new stores following its £1.4bn investment pledge announced earlier this week.

Aldi could open up to 500 more stores across the UK

The discount supermarket said it is searching for freehold town centre stores, edge-of-centre locations and retail park sites that are “suitable for property development”.

Aldi’s criteria for new sites also include a requirement of 20,000 sq ft and 100 parking spaces for customers. Aldi added that “ideally, the location will be near a main road with good visibility and access”.

Aldi’s list of priority locations includes: Kensington, Hackney, Penzance, Bath, Maidenhead, Worthin, Warrington, Bramhall, Newcastle upon Tyne, South Shields, Nottingham, Derby, Birmingham, Warwick, Cambridge, Brentwood, Harrogate, York, Cardiff, Chepstow, Clarkston and Cathcart.

This comes as Aldi said in its latest full-year trading update that the rate of investment in the UK would increase over the next two years to more than £1.4bn as it continues to expand its “distribution and store network”, as well as improving existing stores and its technology infrastructure.

The discounter also confirmed plans to open 18 new stores before the end of 2023 and committed to opening up to 500 more in the UK.

Aldi UK communications director Richard Thornton said: “We want to make our great value groceries accessible to all and to do that we need more stores, particularly in towns and areas that don’t have an Aldi already.

“The areas we’ve identified in our latest list are places where there is demand for stores and we are committed to continue investing until we can bring our quality products and unbeatable prices to as many people as possible.”
