Discounter Aldi has raised the base rate of pay for its warehouse workers by 20%, following on from an increase for store staff earlier in the month.

The pay rise will come into effect from February 1 and will bring Aldi’s 7,000 warehouse workers’ base pay up to £13.18 an hour. It is the third pay increase for warehouse workers at the discounter since January 1, 2022, and takes Aldi’s investment in pay over the period to £100m.

It follows a pay rise for store staff that was announced at the beginning of the month, which brought the Aldi minimum wage for store assistants to £11 an hour nationally, rising to £11.90 based on length of service, and £12.45 within the M25, rising to £12.75.

Aldi UK and Ireland chief executive Giles Hurley said: “Just as we promise our customers that we will do all we can to support them, we are equally committed to supporting our amazing Aldi colleagues – as we remain the highest-paying supermarket in the UK.

“This announcement recognises the hard work and contribution our colleagues make in serving communities across the country and it’s down to them that we are able to ensure our customers can access fresh affordable food, every single day.”

Aldi has also introduced up to two days of paid leave per cycle of fertility treatment to support colleagues on a fertility journey.

It is also the only UK supermarket to offer paid breaks, which it said is “worth an additional £871 a year for the average store colleague”.
