Grocers are preparing for the start of the Soil Association’s Organic Fortnight tomorrow in the wake of figures released last month that showed organic food sales had slowed because of the credit crunch.

Sainsbury’s will offer a raft of offers on its So Organic ranges. A spokeswoman said sales of organic food are steady and “certainly not down”. The grocer will launch a “world first” during the fortnight – organic rocket in a compostable bag.

Waitrose will use in-store displays to drive offers including 20 per cent off organic cottage pie and 20 per cent off organic salmon pie.

Sales of organic products in the UK were almost 20 per cent lower in the four weeks to August 10, according to TNS.
