Grocers have being urged to take more action to prevent supermarket trolleys being abandoned in canals and rivers.

British Waterways, which manages 2,200 miles of the UK’s waterways, has launched a national crackdown to “name and shame” supermarkets that are not doing enough to tackle the problem.

The agency said around 3,000 trolleys end up in the water every year. A hotline opens today enabling members of the public to report abandoned trolleys.

The information collated will determine the least environmentally responsible retailers and be used to map hotspots.

British Waterways said the£150,000 it spends each year to remove the trolleys could be spent on protecting wildlife.
