Tycoon Sir Philip Green’s Topshop, which this week secured its first US store in New York, is poised to enter more foreign markets.

On Wednesday, Green revealed he had taken a 15-year lease on 478 Broadway for Topshop, which will open in September after rebuilding and shopfitting is completed.

He said the store would be “Topshop as is, with some bells and whistles”. Local designers may be introduced, as has been done successfully in Ireland.

Green said: “I am hopeful this will be the start of our American development of the Topshop/Topman brands, with several further sites being considered.

“Additional conversations are continuing about several other international markets where the company is not represented.”

He said a list of potential Indian partners had been narrowed to “three or four” and a decision would be taken on whether to pursue franchises or a joint venture.

Green confirmed interest in China, but dismissed speculation that a deal had been done with Shanghai’s Superbrand Mall.

At present, Topshop has 100 international stores, all of which are franchises. The US stores will be company-owned.
