As Pets Corner ups the ante in its expansion push by acquiring PamPurredPets, Retail Week takes a closer look at the business.

  • Pets Corner is headquartered in Crawley, West Sussex, operating from two warehouses in Crawley totalling 28,000 sq ft
  • The company was founded in in 1968 when Mark and Sandra Richmond – parents of present managing director Dean Richmond – bought a small shop in Sussex
  • Following successful growth a second store opened in 1983. In 1992 a garden centre concept store was opened in Brighton
  • Dean Richmond bought Pets Corner from his parents in 1998 and, in 1999, began opening Pets Corner concessions in garden centres
  • The retailer started to break away from garden centre concessions with its first standalone store in West Hove in 2007
  • The pet specialist opened 14 new stores in 2015 and reported EBITDA of £6m and sales of £45m
  • Prior to its acquisition of PamPurredPets in 2016, Pets Corner had 68 garden centre concessions and 42 standalone stores
  • The retailer prides itself on providing expert nutritional advice to customers on differing food types. Its area of expertise is specialist pet foods, accessories and treatments
  • It aims to be socially and environmentally responsible by adopting an ethical approach to the selling and promotion of pets and by operating zero carbon stores
  • The retailer has a ‘puppy hour’ every Saturday, when customers can bring along their puppies so that they can socialise with other dogs
