Sales at US fashion giant Gap fell 11 per cent in July on a like-for-like basis.

Across the group, total sales fell 5 per cent to US$998 million (£513.6 million) for the four weeks to August 4.

Gap’s Old Navy brand continued to be the weakest performer, with comparable store sales down 16 per cent. Comparable store sales at the Gap and Banana Republic fascias dropped 6 and 8 per cent respectively.

International sales slid 9 per cent on a like-for-like basis.

Gap chief financial officer Sabrina Simmons said: “In July, we focused on clearing remaining summer products and preparing our stores for autumn deliveries. We’re pleased that we delivered merchandise margins significantly above last year.”
