Games Workshop is to enter a new phase of expansion following a review of its store portfolio last year when it closed some of its stores.

The war games and hobbies retailer wants to kick-start store expansion in the UK after a successful year’s trading.

Last year, it closed 22 stores worldwide – four in the UK – and cut 200 jobs after a second profit warning forced management to seek savings of£7 million.

There are 114 Games Workshop stores in the UK, which is its most mature market.

In the year to June 1, the retailer returned to sales growth in the UK, posting pre-tax profits of£1.1 million compared with a loss of£2.6 million the previous year. Sales were£110.3 million.
