German retailers are beginning to suffer as a result of the World Cup, according to the latest figures from Retail FootFall Index Deutschland. Until recently, the number of shoppers had been increasing on German match days, but last Saturday's knockout game saw footfall drop 22.1 per cent compared with the previous week.

This change in shopping habits is expected to continue as long as Germany remain in the competition. FootFall spokesman Robert Stevens said: 'The nation is getting more and more involved in Germany's progress, making each game an event, with the country planning their day around the match, rather than fitting the football into their daily routine.' Stevens added that today's quarter-final game between Germany and Argentina could prove to be a crunch game for retailers as well.
