Sales at John Lewis were flat in the week to November 2, rising just a fraction by 0.3 per cent to £57.7 million.

Aberdeen was the retailer’s best performing store, jumping 14 per cent on last year’s figures.

A free delivery trial and increased web marketing campaigns helped John Lewis Direct increase sales by 42 per cent.

Good demand for Halloween product helped offset slower half-term trade for Waitrose, with sales up 5.5 per cent to£73 million for the period.

Overall sales for the group rose 3.1 per cent to£130.6 million at the end of the third quarter.
