Next is to sell clothing online in the US in partnership with retail giant Sears.

The fashion retailer will sell its product on Sears.com and the US retailer is pitching the British brand as “high end” and “on trend”.

Sears Holdings president of ecommerce Imran Jooma said: “At Sears.com we are always looking to expand and evolve our customer experience while delivering popular items and on-trend fashions to customers.

Next gives customers both style and affordability, so they don’t have to choose between the two.”

Seymour Pierce analyst Kate Calvert said: “We see this as a low-cost way of expanding in the US and learning about the market place.”

She noted that Next chief executive Lord Wolfson indicated at its first-half results that Next would seek to build its international offer online more by word-of-mouth rather than marketing.

Next already ships goods to the US from its website.

Sears is the fourth biggest general retailer in the US, where it has 3,900 shops. The retailer said it was committed to “building an expanded portfolio of iconic brands”.
