Topshop has opened in New York to great fanfare.

Sir Philip Green’s young fashion brand opened in the US to crowds stretching down two blocks on Broadway, eager to catch a glimpse of supermodel Kate Moss and grab a piece of the British fashion brand.

Moss opened the store at 11.30am local time - flanked by Green - wearing a floor length green silk dress and leather jacket from her collection for Topshop.

Confetti fluttered down in red, white and blue as they appeared from the shop.Despite the economic situation at home and in the US, Green was confident the opening would be a success.

“People haven’t stopped shopping,” he said. “The young fashion market has remained pretty resilient during these difficult times.”

Green has hiked up the UK prices in the US, despite the strength of the dollar. A cotton dress from Kate Moss’ ninth collection is Story text35.

Green has set his eyes on Topshop openings in Miami, Boston, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

Green told local reporters yesterday that the store is “the best store we have ever built”.

The store is set over four floors and the brand’s Britishness is clear in the design. The basement is devoted to Topman, the ground floor has womenswear and accessories, the first floor is home to a Kate Moss boutique and on the top floor there is lingerie and a shoe lounge. The escalators show the brand’s London heritage with Union Jacks and numerous references to the UK capital.
