Schuh has rolled out a new footwear recycling initiative so customers can donate shoes from any retailer in return for vouchers.

The retailer said it would be working on its ‘Sell Your Soles’ partnership with textile recycling firm Recyclatex, whereby customers can “recycle their unwanted shoes, no matter where they are from, as long as they are in a wearable condition” and receive a £5 voucher per pair redeemable against full-priced items.

Recyclatex will collect the donations every week with “98% of all components and materials being recycled”. Per tonne of recycled material, the business will then pay Schuh, which will donate the sum to the retailer’s sustainable charity World Land Trust.

The scheme will roll out across all of Schuh’s 130 stores in the UK and Ireland as “part of the brand’s ongoing commitment to operate sustainably”.

Schuh managing director Colin Temple said: “As a fashion retailer, we recognise the importance of protecting the environment and are on a mission to proactively find new ways to operate sustainably.

“We are delighted to roll out Sell Your Soles in partnership with Recyclatex, giving customers across all regions an accessible way to recycle their end of life shoes with confidence.”

Schuh is the latest retailer to announce new measures designed to tackle sustainability issues.

Last Friday, Tesco announced plans to remove 1 billion pieces of plastic from products it sells in UK stores by the end of 2020.

John Lewis has recently poised to become the first department store to eradicate plastic bags, while Lidl said it had reduced its plastic footprint per sale by 8% since 2017.
