New Look is to stop selling menswear in its stores and will only offer the category online from this autumn.
The retailer will start taking menswear out of its 160 branches which cater for both genders over the next few months. Space is likely to be devoted to womenswear or the retailer’s 915 childrenswear assortment.
It is not known whether New Look will reduce its total menswear offering. The retailer is reviewing whether any head office jobs will be affected.
The strategic shift is the latest at New Look, where chairman Alistair McGeorge is running a turnaround programme.
Earlier this year New Look struck a debt-for-equity deal with financiers, designed to slash its long-term debt by 80% from £1.35bn to £350m.
The retailer has also been reviewing its non-core overseas markets – its stores in China are closing – and its Polish arm has filed for bankruptcy. A buyer is being sought for its 30 branches in France.
