Moss Bros, the menswear specialist, has appointed retail investor Maurice Helfgott as an independent non-executive director.

Helfgott will join the group on October 19, weeks after the chain announced that it would axe jobs at the group and that pre-tax losses had widened to £3.3m over the six months to July 31.

Helfgott will hold the roles of senior independent non-executive director and chairman of the remuneration committee.

Helfgott, a veteran retailer and investor, had a long career at Marks & Spencer where he was a director and head of menswear.

He is also the founder of investment vehicle Amery Capital, which owns and operates brands including footwear brand Oliver Sweeney, young fashion chain Kookai and specialist womenswear chain Long Tall Sally.

Moss Bros chairman Debbie Hewitt said in a statement today: “On behalf of the board and the company, I am delighted to welcome Maurice.  He has extensive experience in high street retailing and his business and strategic skills across a broad spectrum of businesses will bring considerable additional strength to the board. We look forward to his contribution and support in achieving the company’s objectives.”

Helfgott said: “I am delighted to be joining the board at this point in the company’s development. I have been impressed with the team and look forward to supporting the business to realise its substantial potential.”
