Marks & Spencer has appointed Eoin Tonge as chief financial officer. Tonge joins from food group Greencore where he held the same role and replaces Humphrey Singer who left at the end of last year.

Marks & Spencer chief executive Steve Rowe said: “Eoin’s appointment concludes a rigorous search for a world-class finance director. He brings in-depth knowledge of food, as well as strategy and operations, and is another addition to the very strong management team we are building to transform M&S.

At Greencore, where he has held his current post since 2016, Tonge oversaw “key strategic changes” such as the divestment of US operations as well as “strengthening the company’s balance sheet, returning capital to shareholders and simplifying the business to focus on its core market-leading propositions in the UK”.

Tonge was formerly managing director of Greencore’s grocery business and prior to that was chief strategy officer, where he “helped create the ‘food to go’ focused strategy which drove revenue and EBITDA growth”.

He also previously worked at Goldman Sachs in a variety of roles in London, Hong Kong and New York.

Tonge said: “Marks & Spencer is a brand that I have admired as a customer as well as a supplier for some time. I’m excited to be joining the board and management team to drive forward the transformation of the business, realise its full potential and make it special again.”

Tonge, who will have a salary of £600,000, joins M&S in June. Interim chief financial officer David Surdeau will stay on to ensure a smooth transition.
