Four people have been taken to hospital after a hoarding on the Mango store in Oxford Street collapsed.
Police have blocked the junction where Oxford Street meets Great Portland Street in both directions and the hoarding is currently being held up by two police vans. A spokeswoman for Westminster Council there is no timeframe as to when the road will reopen as environmental health officers and the district surveyor are currently investigating what caused the collapse.
London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service were called to the store at 4.15pm and has four fire engines and 40 firefighters attending. Three ambulances were also sent to the scene.
It is thought people may actually have been trapped under the Mango hoarding.
A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “Our staff treated four patients – three women and one man. They were all taken to hospital, one with a suspected back injury and the others with minor injuries.”
Mango director Daniel Lopez said: “We are extremely sorry that this accident occurred and we offer our sincere apologies to the injured people. All safety measures were in place and it was unfortunate that this accident happened.
“We will of course be investigating this matter thoroughly and we will be issuing another statement once we have more details. Our thoughts at the moment are with the injured people and their families.”
