John Lewis has unveiled plans to launch a ‘dress for hire’ rental service for customers to address both the continuing cost of living crisis and to offset environmental issues.

‘Dress for hire’ will allow customers to pay a small fee to rent an item of clothing for up to 20 days

The department store giant has launched the new rental service in partnership with platform specialist Hurr.

‘Dress for hire’ will allow customers to pay a small fee to rent an item of clothing for up to 20 days, and follows on from the brand’s hugely successful furniture rental scheme it launched two years ago.

The retailer has set a minimal rental fee of £20. Customers can browse the online collection and choose to rent an outfit for four, eight, 10 or 20 days. The orders arrive with a return bag and pre-paid label and are then sent back to Hurr to be dry cleaned.

Pippa Wicks, John Lewis’s executive director, said: “John Lewis Rental allows our customers to experiment with fashion they love without it having to cost the earth.”

John Lewis also hopes the new service will have an impact on its carbon footprint, citing research which shows that Britons buy more clothes per person than any other country in Europe.

Fast fashion in turn accounts for between 8% and 10% of all global carbon emissions.
