Former Storehouse director Keith Edelman is to join department store chain Beales as non-executive director and the last remaining founding family member Nigel Beale is to retire.

Edelman was group chief executive of Storehouse, which included Bhs and Mothercare, between 1993 and 1999. Most recently he was managing director of Arsenal Holdings.

Beale will leave the board on October 31, after he extended his term as a non-executive director to oversee the appointment of a replacement for The Pier founder Alison Richards, who died last year.

He will become president of the retailer after his retirement.

Beales chairman Mike Killingley said the role of president had been created to “maintain Nigel’s connection with the company to which he has made such an enormous contribution over more than 40 years, 37 of them as an executive director, chairman, and latterly a non-executive director”.
