Dinesh Dhamija, the entrepreneur who founded travel web site Ebookers, is thought to be behind a groundbreaking eco department store likely to launch in London’s Shoreditch.

The one-stop shop for ecological goods (Retail Week, October 26), fitted out with sustainable materials, is expected to carry food, fashion and other products. Shoppers will be encouraged to bring their own bags and containers and buy goods by weight to avoid excessive packaging.

The shop, called Love, Life and Stories, has been scouting potential locations including part of the Truman Brewery, an 11-acre site in East London that houses 200 small businesses at present.

The department store also plans to produce its own publication and create a members’ club.

Retailers increasingly seeking both to grab a share of the emerging green pound and change practices to minimise environmental impact.

Dhamija sold Ebookers in 2005 for a reported US$500 million (£241.9 million). He was unavailable for comment.
