Selfridges is to begin a £300m revamp next month of its 105-year-old Oxford Street flagship store, which will take place over five years.

Work will begin next month, which will expand Selfridges’ accessories department, doubling the handbag area to cover 50,000 sq ft.

Selfridges managing director Anne Pitcher said: “We have the opportunity to create the world’s single biggest destination for accessories, with some of the world’s leading brands.”

It will also create a new store entrance on the east side of the building on Duke Street.

The bulk of the Selfridges UK head office will also be moved to Wigmore Street.

Selfridges chairman Galen Weston said: “This significant investment in the redevelopment of our Oxford Street store is part of our commitment across all our businesses to provide leading luxury shopping experiences for our customers around the world.”
