Selfridges has promoted Alannah Weston to chair of the department store group with immediate effect.

Her appointment makes her one of the few women to chair such a prominent business.

Weston, formerly deputy chair of Selfridges, succeeds her father W. Galen Weston in the role at the family-controlled business.

The retailer said Alannah Weston, who was nominated in the Retail Activist category in this year’s Retail Week Awards for her campaigning on sustainability, will “oversee Selfridges Group’s continued commitment to significant investment across all of its banner businesses, its ongoing leadership in the area of sustainability and work closely with the recently announced leadership team to position the business for continued growth”.

Alannah Weston said: “I welcome the opportunity to work with our great people to create the best destination department stores, providing extraordinary experiences for our customers both in-store and online. I am also determined to continue building a truly sustainable, successful business.”

Her father will become chair emeritus of the Selfridges Group.

Alannah Weston’s move follows senior management changes at the end of last year, when Anne Pitcher succeeded Paul Kelly as managing director of the group and Simon Forster, previously Selfridges & Co customer director, took Pitcher’s role in charge of the retailer’s four stores and omnichannel operations.

Selfridges has performed consistently well over recent years. It reported a record-breaking Christmas sales performance, helped by a programme of in-store events. Sales rose 8% across stores and online in the 24 days to Christmas.
