Harrods is starting its famous winter Sale early as rocketing Covid case numbers and associated restrictions hit footfall in central London.

Harrods is launching the Sale on Friday December 17 - well ahead of the traditional Boxing Day start date. However discounting will be phased, with more price cuts beginning on Boxing Day.

The initiative follows the introduction of work from home guidance, which has hit footfall in central London, and chief medical officer Chris Whitty’s recommendation that people should limit social interactions over the festive period in the face of the threat from the Omicron variant.

Harrods said that “bringing forward the Sale will allow customers to experience the magic of Christmas at Harrods throughout December and beyond”.

Harrods managing director Michael Ward said: “As we enter this important moment in the trading calendar, we are delighted to give our customers the festive treat of the Harrods Winter Sale to enjoy wherever they are, be that at our iconic Knightsbridge store, online or through our remote shopping services.

“Harrods has never been afraid of adapting to suit the changing needs of our customers, and we hope that bringing our sale forwards will give our clients all over the world an opportunity to enjoy the magic of Harrods at Christmas for longer.”

Shopper traffic data for London’s West End revealed an 8% decline yesterday compared the previous Wednesday and a 37% fall compared to the comparable day in 2019. The capital’s big retail names, such as Harrods and Selfridges, have also been hit by the fall in overseas visitor numbers during the health emergency.
