Department stores have revealed lacklustre sales in June.

Neiman Marcus reported total sales fell 19.4 per cent during the five-week period. Sales declined to $323m from $401m (£200.7m from £249.1m) the year before. Like-for-like sales at the group, which also includes Bergdorf Goodman, fell 21 per cent.

Macy’s posted a 9 per cent drop in same-store sales in June, when total sales were down to $2bn (£1.24bn) – a 9 per cent fall compared with the year before.

Same-store sales at JC Penney slid 8.2 per cent during the period and Target suffered a like-for-like fall of 6 per cent. Same-store sales at Kohl’s dropped 6 per cent.
