Belgian retailer Delhaize has strengthened its US presence with the acquisition of Victory Super Markets for US$175 million (£96.5 million).

The 19-store chain generates sales of about US$385 million (£212 million) and was bought through Delhaize subsidiary Hannaford, which runs 122 shops in New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, New York and Maine.

Hannaford president and chief executive Ron Hodge said: 'There is a remarkable fit between Hannaford and Victory. From a geographic point of view, the acquisition gives Hannaford a presence in new, contiguous markets.

'There are also strong similarities between Victory and Hannaford in terms of strategic positioning and customer service.'

The purchase of Victory will bolster Hannaford's store numbers in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
