Debenhams has proclaimed that “any woman can wear rubbish and look good”, with the launch of a new suit made from recycled plastic bottles.
Each suit is made from 50 bottles which are melted down and woven in to a “soft but hard-wearing” type of polyester, said the department store retailer.
The jacket and trouser suit is part of the Debenhams own brand Collection and costs £55 for the whole outfit.
Debenhams says the eco-suit saves energy, reduces carbon dioxide emissions and cuts down land-fill sites.
A Debenhams spokeswoman said: “You definitely don’t need a lot of bottle to wear it.
“We are proud of our creation as it’s right on trend in terms of fashion, and kind to the environment, without costing the earth. If it proves popular amongst our customers then there’s no reason why we couldn’t extend it to menswear.”
Meanwhile, Asda has reduced the price of its ‘interview suit’ as more people seek jobs during the recession. The suit now costs £20 and is ethically sourced from Bangladesh and China, according to the retailer. It will return to its £25 price after Easter Monday.
Asda’s clothing range George is also offering two shirts for £5 or two shirt and tie sets for £8, meaning customers can snap up an entire outfit for £24.
George managing director Anthony Thompson said: “For some men, even having to spend £20 on a suit must be a carefully considered purchase as wallets are particularly strained.
“Why should people have to worry about being able to afford basic workwear in order to make a good impression to help them earn a living, when quality clothing can easily be made accessible for everyone?”
