One-day event will lure Christmas shoppers
Retailers are hoping for a Christmas boost when London's Oxford Street is closed to traffic on Saturday December 17.

The street will be pedestranised between 10am and 6pm and the event is being backed by top retail executives. Marks & Spencer chief executive Stuart Rose said: 'Oxford Street is a great place to shop at any time of year, but this Christmas it will be particularly special. On December 17, the street will be strictly for shoppers. They can look forward to a special festive spirit and shop from 10am until 6pm without any interruptions from the traffic.'

Visit London chief executive James Bidwell believes the street will be able to show off its attributes as a shopping destination. He said: 'The first closure of London's best-known street at the beginning of October was a great success, and I'm thrilled that Oxford Street will be showcasing all its fantastic shopping opportunities in the run up to Christmas in such a high-profile way. Together with the Totally London Winter Wonderland campaign, backed by the Mayor, the Oxford Street Christmas Treat should ensure that Central London is buzzing with shoppers at one of the busiest times of the year.'
