Retail sales by both value and volume edged up during the month of June, according to the latest Office for National Statistics (ONS) retail sales figures.

Sales by value increased 4.3% during the period and volume in sales increased 3.8%, compared with the same month the previous year.

On a month-by-month basis, sales value increased 1.3% and volume increased 1%.

In the three months to June, both the amount spent and quantity bought increased 0.7% compared to the previous three months.

The monthly figures showed non-store retailing and non-food stores both reported the largest contribution to the amount spent and quantity bought in June.

Food stores were the smallest contributor to growth in amount spent at 0.6 percentage points and registered no contribution to the growth in quantity bought.

In the three months to June, both the amount spent and quantity bought increased 0.7% compared to the previous three months.

Online sales as a proportion of all retailing fell to 18.9% in June from 19.3% the previous month.

Department stores continued to show a decrease in non-food sales both in terms of value and volume, which fell 0.2% and 0.4% respectively.

Clothing stores registered an uptick of 1.5% in the amount spent and 1.2% in quantity bought in June – up from the previous month’s declines of 3.4% and 3.8% respectively.

The ONS’ feedback from retailers suggested this was due to customers reacting positively to summer Sales.
