FootFall figures released today show that UK shopper numbers this Sunday were down on last year but that London bucked the weekend footfall trend.

As Christmas nears, shopper numbers are increasing and the momentum across the UK is being sustained. Shoppers returned to central London in droves this weekend, confirming that consumer confidence in the capital is getting back to normal. The like-for-like figures will be welcome news for retailers, who have feared tough Christmas trading.

A FootFall spokeswoman said: 'Although numbers are below the equivalent Sunday in 2004, levels are consistent with what we have seen so far in the 2005 build up. As increased offer activity begins in the last few days and online shopping deadlines loom, higher volumes of shoppers should start to hit the streets looking for those last-minute gifts.'

In the capital, weekend shopper numbers were up 7.7 per cent on last week and 8.5 per cent on last year. The numbers were bolstered by the Oxford Street Christmas Treat event on Saturday.

A FootFall spokeswoman said: 'This is very promising news for London retailers, especially in light of the difficult months since July. The figures suggest that London has returned as a tourist destination and we hope this confidence will continue into the New Year.'
