Comet launched online product demonstration videos last week to enhance customer service and improve conversion rates.

The new web site, Comettv.co.uk, has videos showing how its products work. It hosts 150 demonstrations for products including vacuum cleaners, iPods and laptops.

Comet.co.uk trading manager Danny Higgins said the retailer was in talks with its major suppliers about introducing more online videos, which it expects to have for most products by the end of its first quarter in April.

Comet head of direct channels Simon Rigby said: “It’s like cloning your most knowledgeable sales assistant and making them available to your customers 24/7.”

Higgins expects to see higher conversion rates because customers see the true size of products and how they work.

“The video is a great way of showing how a product is used in everyday life,” he said. Customers can also click through from Comet’s core web site.

Higgins forecasts that about 50,000 customers will view the product videos each month. “Our customers are becoming more demanding as time goes on and they want to get as close to the in-store experience as possible,” he said.

Comet has partnered with London digital services provider Flixmedia to launch the site and Click and Watch video services.

Rival DSGi’s e-tailer Pixmania provides videos for many products sold online and Currys provides videos for 300 products.
