Co-op set to hire regional bosses in buying battle

Co-op is to appoint regional acquisition managers to identify local stores or chains for the supermarket to buy.

The retailer has already appointed Derek Matkin to the new post of business acquisitions manager for the Northern region and North Wales.

Matkin is the first significant appointment made by Co-op head of acquisitions David Turner, who joined in January. He will also make similar appointments for the rest of the UK.

Co-op has bolstered its portfolio in recent years, acquiring Alldays and Balfour. It is also in the running for the Londis, along with Musgrave, Somerfield and Nisa-Today's.
