The Co-op group, which has taken a determined stance on ethical and ecological matters within the grocery sector, is to ballot members and shoppers on ethical and environmental matters.
The initiative will be kick-started today by a direct mailing to the Co-op’s 1 million members who receive its magazine, as well as 250,000 activist members. Shoppers who are not members will be able to take part in the poll by filling in a questionnaire in stores.
Among the issues that will be covered are attitudes to ethical trading, the impact of the Co-op on the environment and animal welfare. There will also be questions about food quality, health and diet.
The Co-op’s move follows similar initiatives that have been undertaken in the financial services sector.
