Sales were up 14% year on year at Waitrose in the week to 28 November, with Christmas orders for premium meat and poultry ranges leading the way.

Alternatives to traditional Christmas dinner are looking popular, with goose orders up 37% and lamb up 255%. However, supply chain director Mark Williamson said that shoppers are increasingly combining premium meat orders with the Essential Waitrose value range, particularly for making Christmas cakes and puddings.

Online sales soared, with Waitrose Deliver up 95% year on year. Other events in the week included the reopening of the Banstead branch after last year’s fire, and the opening of Waitrose’s third motorway service franchise at Warwick on the M40.

Earlier this week sister department store chain John Lewis announced a 22.4% sales rise for the same week, its highest ever for a normal sales week.
