Cath Kidston set to open New York store

Furniture to fashion retailer Cath Kidston is opening its first overseas store as it goes on the expansion trail.

The store, which opens in New York next month, marks the start of a retail roll-out, after handbag and accessories label Lulu Guinness bought a controlling stake in December.

Jo Staveley, who joined as managing director from LK Bennett in February, said she plans to open four stores a year in the UK and the US over the next five years, and is looking at stores in Europe.

'I joined LK Bennett when there were four shops, and saw it grow to 40. I hope to do the same at Cath Kidston,' she said. Turnover is£6 million and growing at about 40 per cent a year.

Staveley plans to boost the range to include more fashion, accessories and kidswear. The retailer presently sells mainly furniture and furnishings in own designed fabrics.

Cath Kidston has four shops and two concessions in central London, as well as 500 global wholesale accounts.
