Second-hand retailer and pawnbroker Cash Generator is pressing ahead with expansion plans this year after benefiting from cash-strapped shoppers looking for bargains on the high street.

It is opening two stores this month, in Northampton and Glasgow, and has identified locations for 17 more stores in the first half of the year alone.

The retailer is working on completing deals in Bristol, Dundee, Preston and Llanelli in south Wales, all of which will open by the end of June.

Cash Generator managing director Julian Urry said: “We have experienced a very positive start to 2009 and our ambitious roll-out programme plan is ahead of schedule. We are extremely confident we will not only achieve but exceed our 2009 target of 20 stores.

“Our plans will result in a significant investment, with each new store costing approximately£200,000, a total of£4m, and the creation of more than 100 jobs.”
