French giant aims for 10 per cent increase each year
French supermarket giant Carrefour plans to increase sourcing from India by 10 per cent each year while it decides if and when to open stores in the country.

Carrefour chairman José Luis Duran said the company sources products worth between US$300 million and $US400 million (£160.9 million to£214.5 million) from India at present, but aims to grow this by 10 per cent every year to double its present level.

He said the retailer, which mainly sources textiles and clothing from India, had identified the country as one of the burgeoning sourcing opportunities and had set up a global sourcing office in New Delhi.

Carrefour is considering setting up regional offices initially for sourcing purposes only, although these could become a base for retail support operations depending on how foreign investment rules develop in the country, he said. The company has a dedicated research team in India analysing the market.

'India is an important country for us. We are keenly looking at it,' said Duran.
