Carrefour has launched Carrefour City, the first of its convenience format stores.

The French retail giant, which this month posted its slowest quarterly sales growth since 2003, wants the store to appeal to urban dwellers and city workers.

The first of four Carrefour City pilot stores opened last week in Paris’ 16th arrondissement. The store is split into two areas, everyday convenience items and essentials.

The test will run for six months before Carrefour decides whether to roll it out further. The grocer has also begun trialling its Carrefour Contact stores, which focus on shopping for pleasure in small towns and villages.
