Subscriptions jump 14 per cent
Carphone Warehouse revealed subscription connections rose 14 per cent to more than 1 million for the 13 weeks to March 31 after a strong year for the group.

Total connections were up 8.3 per cent to 2.41 million. Full-year pre-tax profits are expected to be in line with market expectations.

Chief executive Charles Dunstone said: 'In the mobile market, the strength of our proposition means we have continued to increase sales and market share. As a result, despite the expected slower growth in the overall handset market - particularly in the pre-pay segment - we continue to show good growth year on year, despite last year's very strong comparables.

'In our broadband business, we have made excellent progress - both on the rate of customer migration to unbundled lines and the roll-out of our network of unbundled exchanges. The delays we reported in migration earlier in the year mean we are still a little behind our original business plan, but the current momentum of customer recruitment and migration gives us confidence that we will make up the lost ground by the summer.'

Dunstone added that Carphone Warehouse's joint venture with Best Buy, a mobile retail trial in the US, has performed well and he hopes to invest further in the Best Buy Mobile format with its US partners.

Reaction to the retailer's other new joint venture, Geek Squad in the UK, has been similarly encouraging. The company said it hopes the service will be a natural bridge between its core retail business and broadband service.
